HOME TOUR SERIES: LAUNDRY ROOM

Put your hand up if the laundry room is one of the most used spaces in your home! Since having kids I seem to never leave the laundry room, so I knew when we built our house that I wanted to make it pretty, and of course, functional.

Most new homes have the laundry room on the same level as the bedrooms, however I prefer it off the mudroom. I call it the "messy quarters", because we can leave all the mess in one space. It's great to be able to throw the kids dirty clothes right into the wash and not have it travel throughout the house. It's also nice to have all our cleaning products so close to the kitchen, should we ever have any larger messes. The only "downfall" is having to carry the laundry up the stairs to the bedroom, but we do have a laundry chute so at least getting the laundry downstairs is easy! We spend most of our time on the main level, and I typically do laundry throughout the day, so it's very functional for us.

We opted for Benjamin Moore Oxford White walls and cabinetry. The cabinetry and shelf were custom made by Bloomsbury Fine Cabinetry. There are no windows in this space, but I still wanted it to be bright and airy like the rest of our home, so white was the obvious choice. For the countertops I chose a white oak butcher block to add some warmth. This was done by Knotty's, and I am obsessed with how it turned out. We kept the backsplash simple with a classic white subway tile and on the floors we used Peronda Cuban White Star tile from SS Tile & Stone. Even though the room is quite small, the floors add a fun little touch to such a neutral space. I love that the colour scheme in this room (white, black with wood accents), flows so well with the rest of our home.

I really wanted a wall mount faucet in our house and the laundry room seemed like the perfect spot. It's from a local Toronto company called Rubinet who can customize your plumbing fixtures however you wish - isn't it so cute?! The faucet gives me a little vintage feel, which ties in perfectly with one of my favourite pieces in this space. One of the first things I purchased for our home was the Shiela Maid. I love the way it looks, and the fact that it's also very functional.

Once all the finishes were complete, I began to accessorize! I love all the prints that I found on Etsy (linked below), especially the one with laundry instructions - I can't tell you how many times it has come in handy LOL. The Steele canvas rolling laundry bin is also a piece that I really like. Since the room is small, it's nice to be able to move the bin around easily, and it's also very well made. The only thing I wish I had in this space, apart from a window, is a tall cabinet for brooms, mops etc. Currently I have them mounted behind the door. This works fine, however it would be nice to have them hidden. All in all, this space has made the crazy amounts of laundry much more bearable. Now I actually don't mind hanging out in here when I have to!
